| Normal Combined Trim | Within ±8% (STFT + LTFT) |
|---|---|
| Warning / Pending Threshold | ±10% to ±18% adaptation shift |
| DTC Trigger (P0171 / P0172) | Typically > +20% (Lean) or < -20% (Rich) |
| Idle vs 2,500 RPM Test | High at idle + normal at 2,500 RPM = Vacuum leak |
1. How Closed-Loop Lambda Control Calculates Fuel Trim
Short-Term Fuel Trim (STFT) reacts immediately to upstream oxygen/lambda sensor feedback, adjusting injector pulse width millisecond by millisecond. When STFT stays biased positive or negative over driving cycles, the ECM writes that offset into Long-Term Fuel Trim (LTFT) tables.
2. The Two-Speed RPM Test (Idle vs 2,500 RPM)
If LTFT is +18% at curb idle (750 RPM) but drops to +3% when holding the throttle at 2,500 RPM, an unmetered vacuum leak is entering downstream of the MAF sensor (at high airflow, the fixed pinhole leak becomes negligible). If LTFT increases with RPM/load, suspect weak fuel delivery or an under-reporting MAF sensor.
